John F. Kennedy: Hyannisport Canvas Mail Bag....

John F. Kennedy: Hyannisport Canvas Mail Bag. Presidents get a lot of mail, both at the White House and their vacation retreats. Given the amount involved, the Post Office must use large canvas sacks to accommodate it all. This 23" x 38" canvas mail bag is one such receptacle. It is inscribed on the top of one side: "Pres. J. F. Kennedy Hyannis Port Mass. 2.5.63." A previous name and address was crossed off and additional graffiti applied over the course of its lifetime, including a sketch of cartoon character Andy Gump and the word "Au H2 O" (representing Barry Goldwater who ran for president in 1964 and would have been JFK's opponent had not events dictated otherwise). The consignor is an agent in the entertainment business whose first client was Billy Joel. Her father was the model for Sergeant O'Leary in Joel's "Moving Out" and did, in fact, trade in his "Chevy for a cadillac-lac-lac" after breaking his back in a high-speed chase down present day River Road, departing Hackensack for the West Coast. Once in L.A. he operated a tobacco shop and a satellite postal station. When they were replacing outmoded canvas mail sacks which had proved cumbersome and difficult to lock without jamming up, he was able to obtain the Kennedy bag with his supervisor's approval. The item is accompanied by a letter of provenance from the consignor relating the interesting background to this piece and its former owner.Auction Info

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.View More Testimonials
