    Description

Dwight D. Eisenhower: An Impeccably Documented Presidential Limousine Flag. This flag was the property of Major Anthony S. Suglia, who served under General Chester Clifton as a military aide to Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy. General Clifton was charged with ordering and securing the presidential flags during these administrations. The military aides to the president were responsible for these flags at all times because of the tradition of considering an equivalent to battle flags that must be protected at all costs. Each president received seven sets of flags, including new presidential limousine flags.

Once a president left office, these flags either went with him, as was the case with Lyndon Johnson's flags, or they were given to the responsible military aide as an appropriate thank you from the president. The present example was purchased from the estate of Major Suglia at public auction in 2005, and comes with a notarized letter of provenance. Formerly in the collection of American Political Items Collectors national president Christopher Hearn. Excellent condition. 31.5" x 21", including fringe.

Please Note: It has come to our attention that this particular flag probably never actually flew on a presidential vehicle. It was made by the official manufacturer and is exactly like the limo flags, but it lacks the ID tag present on flags assigned for limo use. Given the provenance, it is likely that this particular flag was innocently misidentified after the passage of many years.

This flag would have been produced in very limited numbers for presentation purposes. It is still an eminently collectable artifact of the Eisenhower presidency even though it never flew on a presidential vehicle. With the kind understanding and cooperation of the consignor, we are revising the estimated value to $800 - 1200.
