John F. & Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy: Their Original Handwritten and Typed Wedding Invitation Lists. According to the letter from Kennedy's longtime secretary Evelyn Lincoln, these remarkable documents were long kept in a folder in the desk of his U.S. Senate office, and were subsequently moved to the White house. These and many other filed items were discarded on November 23, 1963, but were saved from destruction by Mrs. Lincoln.

    Included in this lot are:
1.A mounted display of two handwritten partial lists of Kennedy guests on U.S. Senate note paper, in an unknown hand, including brothers Edward and Robert Kennedy (the letter identified as "best man"), Sargent Shriver, and longtime friend and confidante to JFK, Herb MacDonald.

2.Seven original typed pages of invited Congressmen with addresses including familiar names such as Lloyd Bentsen, Strom Thurmond, Tom Dodd, Gerald Ford, Jacob Javits, Eugene McCarthy, Wilbur Mills, Tip O'Neill, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr., Carl Vinson, Sam Yorty, and Adam Clayton Powell. "Kennedy-Auchincloss" hand-written at top of page 1.

3.Another original list typed in blue-this one mostly U.S. Senators-including Vice President Richard M. Nixon, Prescott Bush (George H.W.'s father, Harry Byrd, Everett Dirksen, Barry Goldwater, Hubert Humphrey, Estes Kefauver Joe McCarthy(!), Margaret Chase Smith and Robert Taft, among many others. Several handwritten additions in an unidentified hand including Frank Church, & Herman Talmadge.

4.A typed 35-page list, marked in red "COPY," of non-political invitees, including such names as Joseph Alsop, John Jacob Astor, Lord Beaverbrook, Irving Berlin, Justice Tom Clark , Walter Winchell, Mrs. William Randolph Hearst, President Herbert Hoover, J. Edgar Hoover, Robert and Edward Kennedy, Alice Roosevelt Longworth, Douglas MacArthur, Perle Mesta, Drew Pearson, James Reston, Cardinal Francis Spellman, Ed Sullivan, President Harry S Truman, Margaret Truman and many others. Kennedy and his bride certainly moved in interesting circles!

If there was every any doubt that the brash young Senator from Massachusetts harbored national political ambitions, these fascinating guest lists should surely put any such doubt to rest! Ex-Robert White Collection, obtained directly from Evelyn Lincoln.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
