John C. Calhoun: Personally-Owned Chinese Export Plate. John Caldwell Calhoun had a colorful career. He was one of the young war hawks in Congress during the War of 1812. He later served as Vice President under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson, who represented different parties or, at least, opposite ends of the political spectrum. After resigning the Vice Presidency, he was elected to the Senate and became the central figure in the Nullification Crisis of 1832. The winner in that standoff was his former boss, President Jackson. In 1850, he supported secession by the Southern states during the crisis that culminated with the Compromise of 1850. This 10" Chinese export dinner plate featuring the Great Seal of the United States was owned and used by Calhoun. It was presented to him while serving as Vice President by the government of China. This example was part of the collection of noted Chinese Export dealer Elinor Gordon. An identical example is pictured in Jean McClure Mudge's "Chinese Export Porcelain for the American Trade 1785-1835" published in 1986. It describes the plate as being part of a service presented to Calhoun.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
