Harry S. Truman: Presidential Flag. Dating from around 1945, this 18" x 31" flag was possibly mounted on the limousine used by President Harry S. Truman. It is made of dark blue wool bunting and has the same design on both sides. There is a wooden flag stick in place which may be original. There is a moderate amount of moth damage, but this is confined primarily to the sides. The central design is in very good shape. In researching the piece, the consignor contacted the Truman Library in Independence. The curator responded: "This does, indeed, appear to be a presidential flag from the Truman administration, dating from sometime after October 1945 when the presidential flag was modified via executive order. It is possible that this was an automobile flag, although we have not located any information to confirm this." We have also been shown a photo of Truman riding in the Presidential limousine, sometime in 1945, in which a similar flag is displayed in front of the car's grill, on the driver's side, mounted on a tall stick. The flag in the photo, like the flag offered here, does not have any fringe. The design was slightly altered and fringe added after October 1945, as stated above. We can email this photo upon request.
