Harry S. Truman: Personally Owned FDR Silver Dollar Pill Box. This item has a great deal of crossover appeal, as the description reveals. It is a gold pill box measuring 1.75" across and .75" high. Mounted on the lid is a gilt brass medallion of "President of the United States Franklin Delano Roosevelt". This is a standard design; however, the signature of FDR has been engraved alongside the bust and filled in with black enamel. That distinguishing "add-on" should tell you that we're dealing with something special. When the lid is opened, we see a 1924 silver Peace Dollar on the other side, of convex form. The base of the box contains an 1876 CC (Carson City) silver Trade Dollar, neatly spot welded. We feel this may have belonged to Franklin Roosevelt who gave it to his friend and Vice President Harry S. Truman. Provenance: Doyle's Jewelry Sale, February 25, 2014, lot 563, Estate of Margaret Truman Daniel.
Note: In 1943, FDR presented a similar box to the "Maverick Family of Texas" (husband and wife Maury & Terrell and their two children). Maury Maverick was a New Deal Congressman and Mayor of San Antonio who coined the term "gobbledygook". In 1934, he hired Lyndon Johnson as his aide. He was the grandson of Texas pioneer Samuel Augustus Maverick (1801-1870) who refused to brand his cattle, leading to the term "maverick".
