George Washington: Documented Lock of Hair. Substantial lock of reddish-brown hair housed in an oval, brass, easel-back frame along with a silhouette of Washington. The frame is not contemporary with Washington, but utilized for display purposes only. According to the accompanying 1977 letter of authenticity and provenance from autograph dealer Conway Barker, the hair was purchased from a Connecticut descendant of signer Francis Hopkinson. We include the early 19th century envelope that originally held the lock of hair. It is inscribed on the front panel: "Chestnut Street/ Philadelphia 1806/ Hair of Gen. Washington/ from my father's desk/ Jos. Hopkinson". Joseph (1770-1848), besides being Francis Hopkinson's son, was the composer of "Hail, Columbia".

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
