George and Martha Washington: An Extraordinary circa 1800 Brooch with Substantial Entwined Hair Locks of Both, from Mrs. Tobias Lear. Originally made as a teardrop-shaped brooch with a T-bar on verso; a modern loop has been added for wearing as a pendant. Silver frame with gold and white enameling and inset red stones, presumably garnets or rubies. The enameling is slightly worn, but appears to read "Gage de mon Amitie," or "Pledge of my friendship." Original beveled glass covers on front and back show light wear. It measures 0.75" x 1.25".

The provenance is as amazing as the object itself. It is accompanied by a small envelope-clearly quite old-on which is handwritten in fine ink "Locket [sic] which belonged to Mrs. A.L. Jones-containing hair of Gen. & Mrs. Washington given to Adm. Storer by Mrs. Tobias Lear."

Lear was Washington's private secretary and close friend, what might be termed his major domo. He was the brother-in-law of Storer and the relic descended through the Storer family until sold in the late 20th century, by Lear's great-great-great-great niece by marriage at auction along with various other early family relics. In the world of hair collecting it is hard to imagine a more desirable relic of our first president and his wife.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
