Franklin D. Roosevelt: Personally-Used Wheelchair From Hot Springs, Arkansas. On June 10, 1936, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt paid a visit to Hot Springs in conjunction with the centennial celebration of the state. Part of his tour included the Fordyce Bathhouse, built in 1910, the most elaborate of such facilities in the area. The chair was purchased by the consignor's father at an auction of surplus items from the bathhouse during its renovation. The chair measures 51" tall and is 25" wide from wheel-to-wheel. The seat and back rest are upholstered in leather. The crest of the seat has a brass plaque attached, reading: "President F. D. Roosevelt Chair". A metal plaque on the back side indicates it was made by the Cendron Wheel Company of Toledo, Ohio. It was no doubt a state-of-the-art deluxe model at the time it was made, with solid oak components, adjustable back and leg supports. It has not been touched... complete with the accumulated dust of decades. An iconic piece associated with our only physically-disabled president who rose to become one of our greatest leaders.
