Dwight D. Eisenhower: Presidential Limousine Flag. We are pleased to offer a flag used on the fender of the Presidential limousine ridden by Dwight D. Eisenhower during his first term of office. Very few of these fender flags were made. They were cared for by the Secret Service. In 1952, Chrysler supplied three custom-built Parade Phaetons to the Federal government for transporting dignitaries in special events. Built on the extended Crown Imperial chassis, all three were returned to Chrysler in 1955. This particular model was frequently used by President Eisenhower and became known as "The Detroit Car". Ike rode in a Cadillac Eldorado for his 1953 inauguration and also used a 1950 Lincoln Cosmopolitan "bubble top" and, after 1955, a specially-fitted Series 75 Cadillac convertible. The Presidential limousine fender flags for the 1952 Chrysler Parade Phaetons are somewhat smaller than the ones made for the Cadillacs. This flag is composed of cotton and a synthetic fabric, possibly nylon. It is hand crafted with a combination of beautiful, completely hand-stitched embroidered stars and hand-knotted individual fringe. One important feature of this flag is the sturdy canvas sleeve-style hoist which could endure very high speed driving if needed, without damage or loss. It measures 19" x 12" including the fringe and is handsomely doubled matted and framed to an overall size of 32" x 25" using archival materials and UV acrylic. It was purchased by the consignor from a woman who was a close personal friend of a retired Secret Service agent who retained the flag when the Chryslers were returned to Detroit. One of these cars was sold at a Las Vegas auction in July 2001. Click here to view a film clip of President Eisenhower riding in a Chrysler Parade Phaeton with a similar, if not identical, flag.
