    Description

Dwight D. Eisenhower: Personally Used Golf Ball. President Eisenhower was fond of hitting golf balls on the White House lawn to relax while in office. He also loved to hit the links whenever the opportunity arose. In contrast to more recent presidents, he never ever used golf balls as gifts, although he might hand one out to a special friend or employee. This ball was given by Ike to White House Chief Electrician John P. Muffler, Sr. He was a second generation White House employee who served under eleven Presidents over the course of his career. He was also noted for his clock-winding and clock-making skills, as documented in a National Geographic Special and mentioned in books by Nancy Reagan and Hillary Clinton. One day, he and Ike were discussing their golf games. At the end of the conversation, Ike gave John this ball and said, "Maybe this will improve your game" to which they both laughed. It is inscribed "President Eisenhower" in red and blue on either side. It is accompanied by a signed Letter of Provenance from Richard T. Muffler, John's son, and a third generation White House employee.
