Dwight D. Eisenhower: Gifted Stetson-style Hat. Size 7 1/4" beige Stetson-style hat owned by President Eisenhower and sent to Alex Shephard, Milestone Plantation, Thomasville, Georgia, as evidenced by the accompanying address label from the White House used in its transport. According to the family, Shepard worked at the plantation and was there when President Dwight Eisenhower visited then Treasury Secretary and owner of the plantation, George Magoffin Humphrey. Eisenhower came to Milestone Plantation on a number of occasions to quail hunt and stayed in one of the guest cottages. The hat was made by Borsalino of Italy. The leather sweatband also has a stamped inscription: "Made Especially for Lewis & Thomas Saltz, Washington, D.C." We assume these gentlemen were D.C. haberdashers and importers and that the this hat was purchased by Eisenhower and gifted to Shephard as a thank you. The hat is in excellent condition and comes with the original MacLachlan hat box.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
