CSA General William Ruffin Cox: Secretary of the U. S. Senate Desk. Heavily carved desk that was used by William Ruffin Cox during his tenure as Secretary of the United States Senate. Cox (1832-1919) was a Brigadier General in the Confederate Army and was wounded an amazing eleven times during the course of the war. He commanded the 2nd North Carolina Regiment and fought at Antietam, Chancellorsville, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, Early's Shenandoah Campaign, Monocacy, Petersburg, the Appomattox Campaign and surrender. He served three terms in the U. S. House of Representatives and was Secretary of the United States Senate from 1893 to 1900. This desk descended in his family and is accompanied by a Letter of Provenance from the consignor, Cox's namesake.

The desk is 47" wide, 30" deep and 31" tall. It appears to be made of pine with a dark stain. The legs are boldly turned and have inverted pad feet. The side stretchers are missing and were likely removed many years ago. There is a carved rope border around the perimeter of the top. There are two cedar-lined dove-tailed drawers with carved lion's head handles. The four sides have deeply carved grape vines and lion's heads. The top has an oak outer border, a painted pine inner border and two natural pine panel writing surfaces. Very fine condition overall... a solid piece of historic furniture.
