Coretta Scott King: Personally-owned Hat. Feathered hat that apparently was a favorite of Mrs. King, as she is pictured wearing it on many occasions. In fact, the image used by Wikipedia in their online biography of the Civil Rights activist shows her wearing it. It has the cloth label of the maker, Jack McConnell of New York, sewn to the sweatband. The label has McConnell's trademark red feather attached to a corner. It is housed in what may be the original hatbox from Cavanagh Hats of New York. It is accompanied by a framed copy image photograph of her and Dr. King in which she is seen wearing this very hat. The photo was taken on December 17, 1964, in New York City when Mayor Robert Wagner presented Dr. King with the city's Medallion of Honor. The consignor purchased the hat from a woman who operated consignment and antique stores in Bakersfield, California for many years. That person obtained the hat from an elderly African American lady who was a friend of the Kings. The hat itself is in excellent condition and well-cared for. A notarized letter of provenance from the consignor will accompany the lot.
