Abraham Lincoln: One of the Finest Lincoln Hair Locks We Have Ever Offered, as Mounted by his Secretary of the Navy, Gideon Welles. A beautiful presentation. The circular lock of perhaps 20-30 strands was tied onto a square of black mourning cloth, which was then mounted on a great 9.75" x 12.25" albumen. We have seen this image in carte de visite size, but never in this imposing version.

Provenance: Purchased in Skinner's November 8, 1983 sale of political Americana (lot 316) where it was described as "Ex-collection of Gideon Welles." A 1987 letter from Skinner guarantees the authenticity of both the hair lock and the Welles provenance. The original auction catalog and Skinner letter are included with the lot. While there is no period Gideon Welles connection, it is well-known that the Welles family was disposing of a number of his personal possessions at that time, including significant artifacts of the Civil War period.

    Excellent condition, and nicely custom-framed to 12" x 14".
