Possibly the Last Portrait Drawn of Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln: From-Life Sketch Taken at Richmond. The capture of the Confederate capital, Richmond, was a long-time goal of Union forces and one, when accomplished, would signal the end of the war. After rebel forces evacuated the city, burning warehouses and war material, President Lincoln lost no time traveling there from City Point for a personal inspection. This took place on April 6th, just three days before the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Courthouse. Captain Ralph Chandler, a career Navy man (1846-1889) commanded the U. S. S. Maumee, a 593-ton screw steam gunboat of the Kansas Group. The Maumee had been part of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron, participating in the successful capture of Fort Fisher. On March 15th, she was assigned to army support operations on the James River. When Richmond fell, the Maumee was one of the vessels assigned occupation duty along the waterfront. Chandler was therefore present when Lincoln made an unannounced visit to Richmond on April 6th. We are offering what may be the last portrait made of Lincoln prior to his assassination. It is a silhouette profile bust, drawn in India ink on a pebbled board measuring 3.5" x 5". It is hinged to a double mat. An ink inscription below the portrait reads: "Drawn from life by Capt. Ralph Chandler. At Richmond, Va. April 6, 1865". The mat has an ink inscription from Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address: "Fondly do we hope - Fervently do we pray - that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. March 4, 1865." The mat (circa 1900) and paper are lightly toned. The ink is rich black with some white mottling. Its provenance includes the Collection of New York painter and collector Daniel Huntington (1816-1906), sold as lot 276 by Stan V. Henkels Auctioneers on July 1, 1920, and the Abraham Lincoln Book Shop. It is sold together with a complete copy of the Henkels catalog, a letter of authenticity from the Abraham Lincoln Book shop and extensive copies of Rear Admiral Chandler's military record.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
