    Description

Abraham Lincoln: Approximately Twenty-Five Strands of Hair Formerly Owned by Alexander Gardner. 3" long locket of hair tied together with thread and attached to a small card inscribed "Lincolns Hair". This, in turn, is housed in a Civil War-period yellow envelope inscribed identically in pencil. That is housed in a larger envelope reading "Lincoln Hair. Cut off by undertaker and given to my father." (this written by one of Alexander Gardner's children). It is accompanied by a 1926 TLS from noted Lincoln memorabilia collector Osborn H. Oldroyd regarding the "lock of Lincoln's hair" which a Mrs. Mussey (associated with the G.A.R.) was attempting to sell on behalf of a friend. Oldroyd feigns disinterest, but agrees to place the lock with a Lincoln collector if able.

This lock of hair was part of a collection of artifacts recently consigned to Heritage that originally belonged to noted Civil War photographer Alexander Gardner. The collection was contained in a large Congressional mailing envelope (included) marked on the outside "Lincoln curios. Estate items. Lincoln curios & ring". The material belonged to the consignor's mother who passed without divulging any information as to its history. The consignor speculates that the material may have descended by way of an ancestor named Sweeny, a Civil War-era judge in the District of Columbia.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
