[Thomas Jefferson]: Personally-Owned Silhouette of Granddaughter. 4.25" x 5.25" hollow-cut silhouette of Virginia Jefferson Randolph Trist (1801-1882), granddaughter of Thomas Jefferson. Housed in a 1960 frame, the bubble glass eglomisé mat is original and of the period. According to a notarized letter of provenance and Jefferson-Randolph Family history that accompanies the lot, Thomas Jefferson kept this silhouette and one of his daughter, Martha Jefferson Randolph (Virginia's mother), in his writing or lap desk. It descended from Jefferson to his great great granddaughter Mrs. Roswell Randall Hoes who gifted or sold it to neighbors who were descendants of James Monroe. Virginia was born at Monticello and was married there to Nicholas Philip Trist on September 11, 1824. Trist had an interesting diplomatic career but, like Jefferson, experienced near financial ruin.
