[George Washington]: Washington Elm Wooden Gavel Relic. 10" wooden gavel with brass plaque reading: "The Geo Washington Elm/ Planted 1798 Presented by/ Adolf Scheizerhof P.M." The most famous "Washington Elm" was located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The gavel is housed in a wooden box which gives a summary of the history of this gavel. It reads: "This Gavel Is Made of the wood of an Elm Tree planted by George Washington in front of the Capitol Bldg. in the year 1798, and blew down in the year 1950." Additional paperwork (typed transcripts) indicate that Washington planted four elm trees in front of the brick house he built in 1798 "a little to the north of the Capitol." The last of these trees "succumbed to old age" in 1948. Washington, D.C. was founded in 1790, but the government did not move their from the old capital, Philadelphia, until 1800.
