[Franklin D. Roosevelt]: Rare Pair of Delft Jars Gifted by Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau. Pair of Delft earthenware tobacco jars, 14" tall from the base to the tip of the brass lid finial. They are approximately 9" across. Of bulbous form, the blue decoration features a displayed American eagle captioned "Hetwapen van Amerika" (translation: "The Coat of Arms of America"). A wreath at the top has the initials "CGF", possibly those of the original owner. Beneath the escutcheon, we see tobacco, various goods for export as well as a jar just like this one. The initials "NM" appear on an oblong object, perhaps a platter. At the very bottom of one example, it says "No 16". The matching example says "No. 13". The base of the jar has three bells, the potter's mark. It comes with the original brass lid with urn finial, similar to the motif seen on colonial era andirons. There are masking tape labels on the interior of each lid, as well as on the base of one example, each with the name "R. Dean". Both are heavy with cream-colored bluish glaze. Circa 1790-1800.Condition: The No. 16 jar has a 7/8" chip on the lip which is not visible when the lid is in place. No. 13 is in excellent condition with, like its mate, normal edge wear to the lip.
As if their importance as early American artifacts isn't enough, their history of ownership enhances them even further. They are believed to be the very same jars given as a birthday gift to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1938 by his Secretary of the Treasury, Henry J. Morgenthau, Jr. A period photograph at the Presidential Library in Hyde Park pictures them atop the fireplace mantel at Top Cottage, on the Springwood family estate, in Duchess County. They flank an oil portrait of the President. A large letter "R" appears on the face of the stone fireplace. We include a copy of that photo, along with a 1977 Signed Letter of Provenance from Elliott Roosevelt who inherited the artifacts.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.View More Testimonials
