    Description

[Abraham Lincoln]: Conspirator Mary Surratt Door Knob. Here's an oddball item... a ironstone and metal door knob from the rooming house operated by Mary Surratt, frequented by John Wilkes Booth and his fellow conspirators in the follow-up to Lincoln's assassination. It measures 2.25" across and has some good heft to it. A two-sided Denison paper tag describes it and states: "The building was being remodelled to make a Chinese restaurant and Bert Sheldon of the Metropolitan Police secured a few of these knobs." We believe that Mathew Brady's gallery in New York City (Broadway & Bleeker) met a similar fate. The owner of the Brady building, a gentleman from Thailand, painted over Brady's advertisement that appeared on the side of the building, on the top level.
