Description

Temperance: Early and Graphic Broadside. This 19" x 24" broadside, titled "Deacon Giles' Distillery" was published in New York, likely in the 1820s or early 1830s. It contains five woodcut illustrations of the downward progress of Deacon Giles, who began selling bibles and ended up with a distillery and grog shop, on the road to perdition. It has four verses of the "Song of the Demon Brewers" and five columns of text excerpted from the "Salem Landmark". Aside from some minor loss and wear at the folds, it is in very fine condition.
