Socialism: 1888 German Language Newspaper Carrier's Address. 19" x 27" chromolithograph in "Duke's Cameo" oak frame. Issued at Christmas time 1888 by the New York City German language newspaper, the "New Yorker Volks-Zeitung". This rarity has some great graphics, ranging from the Statue of Liberty inspired female figure to a den of serpents labeled with the evils of society. A red banner placed behind Lady Liberty is inscribed [in German] Humanity's Banner. The Socialist Platform, Marx & Engel's Communist Manifesto, a letter referencing John Brown, another referencing the victims of the Haymarket bombing appear on the ground. Symbols of industry, farming, manufacturing, learning and the arts are strategically placed. Some insect damage to border area. The frame has its two original wooden backing boards which, at the minimum, should be replaced with archival material. We could locate no other examples of this colorful poster. At the time of its demise in 1932, the Volks-Zeitung was the only German language paper still operating in the U.S.
