    Description

    New York City: Mayoral Candidate John J. Morgan Lampooned. The split in Tammany Hall (between the Equal Rights faction and the regular organization) cost the Democrats the New York City mayoralty in 1837. John J. Morgan lost to Aaron Clark. Morgan is escorted by valets, including a diminutive black man carrying two pistols. A German-Irish riot goes full-tilt in the background while two Irish Democrats comment on the their party standard bearer. It is titled: "The Would-Be Mayor Preparing To Quell A Riot" and was published by H. R. Robinson of New York. It is 21" x 14" with some expertly repaired border tears along the right side.
