    Description

John C. Fremont & William L. Dayton: A Very Rare 1856 Broadside for the First Republican Presidential Candidate.
"All friends of Freedom, Free Speech, and Free Kansas, are invited to attend." Nowhere was the growing rupture in our national fabric more apparent than in "Bloody Kansas," where virtual guerilla war occurred in the years prior to the formal break-up of the Union. Fremont, because of his aggressive anti-slavery stance, was a particularly controversial candidate.

This important broadside was displayed in Morristown, N. J. Filled in in pencil: "The Hotel of Theodore P. Skillinger," and signed by "John Vandyke, Esq." The rally was set for Oct. 7, 1856. Condition is excellent, definitely superior for the type. Not examined outside of the mat, but it appears to have been professionally mounted. 10.5" x 17.5".

Heritage has offered several broadsides issued in support of Fremont, selling for up to $15,000. however, none of those featured his name, let along "Fremont and Dayton" so prominently. An important item for the serious collection of nineteenth-century broadsides.
