    Description

Horatio Seymour: Large Folio Allegorical Cartoon. 23" x 18" lithograph published by Bromley & Company in 1868, titled ":The Great November Contest. Patriotism vs. Bummerism." It depicts the fine steeds Seymour & Blair pulling the Constitutional Chariot towards the Capitol and White House while the mule team of Grant & Colfax are bogged down, impeded by the graves of 100,000,000 white lives sacrificed for black freedom. Many of the prominent personalities of the day are featured, most in unflattering terms. Racist stereotypes abound. Bromley issued these oversize cartoons in the elections of 1864 and 1868. They are invariably pro-Democratic and anti-black.

Condition: Hinged to mat. Restoration to small areas of border loss. Faint vertical fold. Some light damp stains. Numerous tape repairs on verso. These are hardly ever found in good condition. This rare example displays quite well and is ready for framing. Selections from the Collection of Tom Charles Huston.
