Anti-Horace Greeley: A Fantastic Large 1872 Campaign Poster Savaging His Candidacy. This poster advertises for sale a book that includes biographies of the 1872 candidates, party platforms, et cetera. There were many such campaign volumes published from the middle of the 19th century through the early 20th century. Most at least attempted to be fairly objective, however, it is apparent that this poster and the book that it advertises are in fact a partisan effort and support of Grant's candidacy. The central cartoon caricatures Greeley as an ineffectual old woman. The text below references Grant in a positive light, but rebuts Greeley for his failings: "his endeavor to vote for Lincoln off the Union ticket," "his proposed surrender to the South," et cetera, and derides his political supporters as "the so-called Liberal Movement."

This lot also includes an actual cloth-bound copy of the book advertised on this poster, in fine condition but fine miner cover damage. The text is sprinkled with amusing full-page cartoons.

Political display items from the 1872 election are extremely rare, especially those referencing or picturing Horace Greeley. The present example is in excellent condition but for typical crease lines, as it was originally folded for distribution and a few totally trivial small, light wrinkles. Measures: 21" x 30".
