Abraham Lincoln: 1863 Thanksgiving Proclamation. 18 1/2" x 25" broadside on laid paper, Boston, July 27, 1863, featuring a proclamation by Massachusetts Governor John A. Andrew on the top half, followed by President Lincoln's July 15th "Proclamation of a Day of Thanksgiving, Praise, and Prayer" on the bottom half. The first presidential thanksgiving proclamation had been issued in 1789 by George Washington. Additional days of "national humiliation, fasting and prayer" had been proclaimed by various presidents corresponding with periodic crises. Each state set its own date for the thanksgiving celebration, but it had not, until Lincoln's proclamation, attained the status of a national holiday. The event that prompted Lincoln was the Union victory at Gettysburg. Here, he sets the date for the holiday as August 6, 1864. He issued a second proclamation on October 3, 1863 moving the date forward to November, where it has remained ever since. Loss to upper right corner, one internal tear or cut, scattered tape bleed-through. Although issued in Massachusetts, no other broadsides of like nature from other states are known. Handsomely framed in a vintage frame with alternating inlays of brown and blond strips of wood.
