[Zachary Taylor vs. Lewis Cass]: Ambrotypist Advertising Broadside. 9.25" x 12" [sight] broadside titled "Ambrotypes." It was issued to promote photographer J. H. Doughty who apparently traveled from town to town taking pictures of the locals. Printed by Osborne & Killey of Poughkeepsie. It shows the Democratic and Whig Vice Presidential candidates of 1848, William O. Butler and Millard Fillmore. Matted and framed to an overall size of 14.5" x 17.5". Light damp stain along the left side and top, of little import. We are unsure of the origins of the ambrotype process. It was supposedly introduced into the United States by British inventors in the late 1840s, although the process peaked in the 1857-1865 period. Given the illustrations, we're inclined to date this circa 1848 or shortly thereafter. If you like 19th century political items and vintage photography, this is a real neat piece!
