    Description

[Stephen A. Douglas]: Democratic Campaign Newspaper Advertising Broadside. Graphic 5 1/4" x 17" handbill titled "Pictorial Plain Dealer, For The Presidential Campaign." The illustration is captioned "Impending Crisis! Irrepressible Conflict!" and shows two men in a tug-of-war over a slave straddling the border between North and South. Though inscribed in ink 1856, we believe the item was published in 1860, as it references the platform adopted at the Charleston Convention and its support of the eventual nominee at Baltimore. The planks include completion of a transcontinental railroad, the purchase of Cuba and the strict enforcement of the Fugitive Slave Law, being thwarted by the actions of several state legislatures. Loaded with history! Selections from the Collection of Tom Charles Huston.
