    Description

[John Quincy Adams]: Original, Classic Anti-Jackson Coffin Handbill. 15" x 20" broadside on rag paper, titled: "Some Account of some of the Bloody Deeds of General Jackson". Eighteen coffins are depicted, representing the soldiers that were unjustly executed on order of their commander, Andrew Jackson, during the War of 1812. A small cartoon shows Jackson using a sword-cane to dispatch someone who was reaching down for a stone to defend himself during an argument. Issued as part of a smear campaign against Jackson in the 1828 campaign, partly to counter the charges of "Corrupt Bargain" between John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay. The verso has the name of the original owner, James Beech, written twice, along with the notation "Six militia men & coffin handbill May 26th 1828." Minor loss to lower left blank border. Deckled edges. A facsimile was produced in the 1890s on wood pulp stock, with some differences. The facsimile fools a lot of people, but not us! This is the original from 1828!
