    Description

William Jennings Bryan: The Iconic "Octopus" Poster from the 1900 Election. 18 1/8" x 28 1/2" [sight] stone lithograph by Strobridge Lithographers of Cincinnati. This colorful and evocative poster is considered by many to be the ultimate example of political poster lithography from this golden era. "No crown of thorns.... no cross of gold" it proclaims, while Bryan is surrounded by rich imagery: the Statue of Liberty being hailed by liberated Cubans and Filipinos; a plow and hammer symbolizing American agriculture; the Liberty Bell; a figure of Justice; and a silver dollar and gold coin, representations of the 16-to-1 monetary issue. Most compelling is the image of Lady Liberty, wielding an ax, chopping at the octopus of "trusts" which ensnares in its tentacles representations of major American industries. Image is clear and seemingly without flaw overall an excellent example. Framed in a silver metal frame to an overall size of 22" x 32" [not examined outside of frame]. Selections from the Collection of Tom Charles Huston.
