    Description

Wendell Willkie: Anti-War Campaign Poster. 11" x 14" cardboard poster reproducing a photograph of "Roosevelt Signing Conscription Bill". FDR and four other government officials, including George C. Marshall, are having a good laugh. The poster is inscribed: "What's the Joke! Another Step Toward War." Issued by the Franklin County War Veterans Republican Club. Two minor bends at top corners. The Selective Service Act was signed into law on September 16, 1940. It was the first peace time conscription law enacted in the U.S. It was barely renewed a year later by a single vote. FDR campaigned in 1940 on a pledge of not involving the U.S. in any foreign wars. Events in Europe in the summer of 1940 convinced many that the U.S. would eventually be forced into the war and must prepare for it, or else risk defeat. Neutrality was popular among voters. Its proponents included many prominent Americans, including Charles A. Lindbergh of the America First Committee. Great content.
