    Description

Franklin D. Roosevelt: Fantastic Artifact from FDR's First Run for Political Office. 8 1/4" x 13 1/2" mini-poster or window display card on thin textured board, inscribed "Franklin D. Roosevelt For State Senator Counties of Columbia, Dutchess and Putnam". A 5 1/4" x 9 1/2" portrait of the aspiring Democrat, printed on thick paper stock, is affixed in the middle. FDR ran for the New York State Senate in 1910, managing to win election despite being in a historically Republican district. His cousin Theodore Roosevelt was immensely popular and some of that fame might have rubbed off on Franklin. He was re-elected in 1912, then appointed as Assistant Secretary of the Navy in 1913 by Woodrow Wilson. Very few artifacts were issued for this initial foray into politics. We can think of a 7/8" picture button (worth $4000-$5000) and this item which, to our way of thinking, is a superior piece by virtue of its display value and presence. Some light discoloration at top & bottom, as shown, quite nice overall.
