Clarence Darrow: 1907 Appeal to Reason Poster. 11" x 15" poster depicting celebrated criminal trial lawyer Clarence Darrow, titled: "Darrow's Speech In the Haywood Case". Published by the Socialist Party Newspaper "Appeal to Reason" of Girard, Kansas, edited by Eugene V. Debs. William Dudley Haywood ("Big Bill") was placed on trial in 1907 for the December 30, 1905 murder of former Idaho Governor Frank Steunenberg, an ardent foe of the Western Federation of Miners. Haywood's co-defendants were Charles Moyer and George Pettibone. All three were eventually exonerated, but it was Darrow's impassioned plea that secured Haywood's acquittal. Haywood was a proponent of industrial unionism. He founded the Industrial Workers of the World (I.W.W.) in 1905. As leader of the "Wobblies", his motto was "Good pay or bum work!" While out of prison pending an appeal of his sedition conviction in 1921, Haywood fled to Russia.

Some foxing and light wear at folds. This was Darrow's personal copy. The consignor's great-aunt Ruby was Mrs. Clarence Darrow.
