ANTI-BRYAN 16-1 POSTER.. This is one of the more graphic, colorful, and issue-oriented posters issued in the campaign of 1896. It is titled "16 to 1–Free Silver Means a Silver Dollar is Worth Only 53 Cents." The up-shot of this poster is that the currency will be devalued and inflation ignited should Bryan be elected president. Bryan is shown leading a wagon train of silver to the U.S. Mint. Passengers include Sewell, Tom Watson and John Altgeld. Uncle Sam takes the silver and produces silver dollars which he gives to factory workers as wages. When these workers go to the company store to purchase goods, they discover that the prices have been increased to offset the fact that a silver dollar is now worth only 53 cents. Uncle Sam apologizes for the situation, blaming the Popocrats and Silverites. The workers are illilusioned with Bryan and his campaign promises for better times. The poster measures 17 1/4 x 24 1/2" and has a credit "Designed by C. W. Mott." It has been archivally and tastefully matted and framed. The frame has an "old-time" look and complements the poster perfectly. The narrow, blank border has been trimmed, but the plate is affected and totally complete. There are some minor, lateral tears extending about half-way across the poster near the very bottom. These have been neatly repaired and are quite unobtrusive. The overall appearance is excellent– there are no stains or discoloration whatsoever. We are aware of only one offering at auction in the last thirty years.
