Andrew Johnson: 1866 Soldier's Convention Broadside. 12" x 9" broadside announcing a call for a "Soldier's Convention" to be held in Seneca Falls, New York on September 13, 1866, to "endorse the Restoration Policy of President Johnson." This was in response to a directive of the pro-Andrew Johnson convention held in Philadelphia August 14-16, 1866. That convention wished to form a third party as a counterweight to the Radical Republicans who controlled Congress. They supported Johnson in his efforts for reconciliation with the South. The attendees at the Seneca Falls convention would "appoint Delegates to the Soldier's National Convention at Cleveland." The National Convention of Union Soldiers and Sailors did meet in Cleveland on September 17, 1866. Attendees included Nathan Bedford Forrest (not exactly a Union soldier!) and George Armstrong Custer. The controversy surrounding that meeting soured Custer on politics from that time forward. Like Johnson's "Swing Around the Circle" in August 1866, these conventions were a dismal failure and failed to attract public support.
