Abraham Lincoln: 1864 Campaign Broadside. 9 ½" x 12" broadside or handbill, signed "Democrat!", issued on behalf of Lincoln & Johnson in the 1864 Presidential election. Likely issued in New York City, it is addressed "To Working Men." It points out that the war is "nearly brought to a successful end", that slavery would be extended if the South wins ("Do you want any more Negroes in this country?"), that slaves are not consumers that could buy products produced by workingmen in the North, that Southerners want to bring their slaves into the territories thereby shutting out emigration by Northern families ("where Slavery is, free labor is not profitable"), and that McClellan favors the aristocracy. The final two paragraphs are worth quoting: "Abraham Lincoln says, 'Let no more Negroes be brought here from Africa, but treat those already here with kindness! Let no more Western lands be cursed with the labor of the slaves; but give it... to our own industrious White Freemen.' Workingmen, stand by your order. Lincoln and Johnson were poor men and worked for their living. They rose to high places, as you, their comrades, may rise... stand by your colors and vote for Free America, united and strong, and THEN LET ENGLAND INTERFERE IF SHE DARE." This broadside plays upon racial fears, class antagonism, and hatred for England among Irish Democratic voters. It doesn't get much better than that! Minor edge chipping with repairs on verso of several small border tears.
