Polk & Dallas: An Important Large 1844 Political Cloth Flag Banner. While Collins lists twenty-eight different campaign flags and bandannas for Polk's 1844 opponent Henry Clay, he lists only four for Polk, including this one (the Threads of History plate example, page 120). It is a most impressive flag with very strong red and blue colors. Originally manufactured to read simply "James K. Polk and George M. Dallas." However, an enterprising supporter of Pennsylvania gubernatorial candidate Francis R. Shunk had stenciled the third name below. Unfortunately, the ink he used was vulnerable to moisture, and so the letters in Shunk's name have bled somewhat, although the name is still clearly readable. Pairs of the large Polk and Clay portrait flags have twice changed hands at the $100,000 level, making this an affordable opportunity to acquire a great flag for this tough candidate. 27.25" x 21.5".
