    Description

Polk & Dallas: A Rare 1844 Campaign "Pewter Rim." Portraits of the running mates under glass on either side, with pewter rim, hence the term applied to this genre of campaign novelties. Beautiful condition on this example featuring large, bold portraits. Minor, very trivial abrasions on the pewter surface noted only for strictest accuracy; this is an exceptionally fine specimen. As usual the suspension loop at the top is absent. Diameter 2.5"

These pewter rims first appeared for Jackson and Adams in 1828, and were made in a variety of sizes, and with black & white and color portraits, for most candidates up through the 1848 campaign. Several different manufacturers seem to have made them, yet all are rare. Perhaps many were discarded after their fragile, thin glass broke, or after they developed staining (they do not seem to be water tight, as a number of surviving examples show moisture stains). The total population of all known examples for all candidates is probably well under 100, with fewer than ten picturing Polk and Dallas.

All Polk campaign items are rare, and these pewter rims have always been considered the "crème de la crème" for this tough candidate.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
