Polk & Dallas: Simply the Finest Political Campaign Banner in Collectors' Hands. This magnificent double-sided jugate banner from the 1844 campaign was first shown publicly when it graced the cover of the catalog for the 1984 exhibition of items from the Berman Collection at the Hudson River Museum. It created a tremendous stir at the time, and has been spoken of among hobbyists in reverential tones ever since. The fact that it pictures these rare candidates is the "icing on the cake," but this would be a monumentally important banner regardless of who was depicted.

In his definitive reference work Threads of History, Herb Collins pictured only four Polk political textiles: two flags, a quilt, and this banner. By way of contrast he lists no less than thirty-one examples for Polk's opponent, Henry Clay. When pictured by Collins, the banner was owned by New England collector Paul Longo. Perhaps they were the only photos available to Collins, but he inexplicably showed only very poor black and white close-ups of the center portion in his book. Not until the Berman show and catalog did collectors and scholars have the opportunity to fully appreciate its scale and beauty.

As were all banners of this type, it was handpainted, and the colors are vivid and vibrant. The condition is truly remarkable as well, as good as any political banner of this era we have ever encountered. It is also very stable, and not at risk for serious deterioration (unlike the majority of banners of this era, especially those made from silk, which present serious conservation challenges). At 76.5" x 75", the banner is large enough to have tremendous display presence, but not so large as to be awkward for a private collector to display in one's home or office. Truly a museum-quality political campaign artifact in the highest sense of that term.
