William McKinley and William Jennings Bryan: A Most Unusual 1½" "Eclipse" Button Variety. To our knowledge this is the only existing specimen of this distinctive design, which was purchased from an Ohio auction catalog. By an obscure button maker, Bullard & Moore of Kansas City, it is unique in several respects: the size, gold accents, and the slogan beneath McKinley's portrait: "Imaginary Eclipse/ Visible only at Kansas Cy. July 4". July 4 was actually the opening day of the 1900 Democratic National Convention in Kansas City, so this button was undoubtedly made for that occasion. There are a number of variations of these clever designs, which show one or the other of the 1900 candidates being eclipsed by the wearer's favorite. As a group, they are among the most sought after of political button designs, ranging in price from around $2000 to $20,000 for the colorful jugate eclipse. This particular example must surely rank as one of the most desirable. Basically, it is in beautiful condition, including the distinctive back paper. On careful examination one notes a little trivial, very light mottling, which tends to be obscured by the complex design, and in our opinion detracts only minimally. One of the most intriguing and significant pinback buttons, which it has been our pleasure to present.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
