Description

William Jennings Bryan: Phenomenal Campaign Button from 1900. After the "First Battle" of 1896, William Jennings Bryan was again chosen by the Democrats to run for President in 1900. He faced the same opponent, William McKinley, and few doubted the result would be any different. Bryan chose to soft-peddle the issue of bi-metallism and the Gold Standard and instead criticized U.S. imperialism in the Philippines and the Caribbean. The Philippine insurgency under Aguinaldo had been a long and costly conflict for the U.S. In hindsight, the financial benefits of imperialism did not match the expenses of maintaining a far-flung empire. On this extremely rare cartoon button, candidate Bryan hands the Constitution to Uncle Sam who holds the American flag, while straddling the U.S. mainland and Porto Rico. In contrast to the Republican slogan "Trade Follows the Flag", Bryan declares: "The Constitution Shall Follow the Flag". Bryan places his left foot on the "Trusts" dragon which is in the process of devouring President McKinley who wears a crown. The button is in excellent condition and retains the Shepherd Photo Company of Minneapolis back paper. There appears to be a narrow, circular line around the perimeter of the button. Close examination reveals this is not a defect, but the outer edge of the artwork used to photograph and produce the button. It seems the original paste-up was unsatisfactory, so a new one was produced and laid on top of the old one. There are probably only a handful of these known within the hobby. We cannot recall the last time one made an appearance. It may be many years before another example comes to the marketplace. Size 1 1/4".
