Description

William Jennings Bryan: Esoteric Anti-Expansion Button. Back in 1899 when this button was made, a lot of Americans knew Latin and could decipher the slogans on this colorful campaign button. Today, we rely on the Internet. Titled "Anti-Expansion", it depicts the presumptive 1900 nominee flanked by two Goddesses, an eagle, globe and American flags. The slogans include "E Pluribus Unum" (we should all remember that one from the "Wizard of Oz"!), "Ne Plus Ultra" (none higher or better) plus others that translate to: "The Hope of the People is the Supremacy of the Law", "Where Liberty Dwells, There is My Country" and "I Care About the Future". There is a small and faint stain on the curl of the button, barely affecting the word "Lex". It displays near-mint. We are selling the McKinley mate in this sale.
