Description

William Jennings Bryan: Cyclone Button and Bonus. We offer two Kansas coattail jugates from the election of 1900. One is the ever popular, yet elusive, cyclone or tornado button. It features real photo portraits of Bryan and a local Kansas candidate (possibly a fellow named Willard Breidenthal) atop a tornado funnel. It was somehow hoped that the cyclone would transport the candidates not to the Emerald City of Oz, but to the Capitol City of Washington. Filled back with R. M. Johnson of Cherryville, Kansas label. Excellent condition. Sold together with another 1 1/4" button featuring the same pair in a more conventional, down-to-earth setting (Whitehead & Hoag back paper, three lateral cracks in the lower half).

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
