William Howard Taft & Theodore Roosevelt: A Striking and Prohibitively Rare 1 1/2" Jugate Design. This is the first time we have personally handled this stunning RWB jugate, which declares Taft and Theodore Roosevelt to be "Our Comrades." When and why was this button produced? Taft was a protégé of Theodore Roosevelt, but if it was made prior to Taft's presidency Roosevelt would logically have been on the left. The youthful Roosevelt portrait is most unusual, and we wonder if it was selected because it so nicely matched the Taft image. So we return to the question of when and why. One possibility is that this is a 1912 issue, intended to promote Republican Party unity. In any case, it is a superb button, one of the most prized items in the Pressman Collection. It presents as near-mint, but there is some inconsequential small staining on the curl.
