Truman & Weizmann: Recognition of State of Israel Jugate. 1¼" real photo jugate of the first President of the State of Israel, Chaim Weizmann, and U.S. President Harry Truman. The United States was the first country to recognize the State of Israel following its declaration of independence on May 14, 1948. Britain then renounced its mandate in Palestine. The Soviet Union was the second country to recognize Israel which joined the United Nations the following year. Truman's friend and former partner in his failed haberdashery, Eddie Jacobson, wrote a private letter to President Truman in 1948, asking him to recognize Israel in consideration of their close personal friendship and the plight of the Jewish people following the Holocaust. This extremely rare button, likely made by Emress of New York (Emanuel Ress), no doubt was issued in the wake of Truman's decision, coinciding with his uphill election campaign. We believe there are only two specimens extant. Excellent condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
