Roosevelt & Fairbanks: Fantastic Advertising Classic. In 1904, the Fairbanks Scale Company saw an opportunity to promote its product, given that the Republican Vice-Presidential nominee was Charles W. Fairbanks. Not wishing to alienate their Democratic customers, they produced buttons favoring both Theodore Roosevelt and his opponent Alton Brooks Parker. This is the Roosevelt version. Titled "Roosevelt and Fairbanks", it shows TR outweighing Parker on a Fairbanks balance beam scale, held aloft by Uncle Sam. The G.O.P. elephant, seeing the result, declares "Good Scales 'Teddy'". This imagery harkens back to the early 19th century nostrum "Weighed in the Balance and Found Wanting." The button has a Baltimore Badge back paper. It has slightly yellowed over the years and there are perhaps six extremely faint fox marks which impact little, if at all. The Roosevelt version is decidedly rarer than the Parker counterpart. We are also selling the Parker mate in this sale.
