Description

McKinley & Roosevelt: A Rare and Striking "Dinner Bucket" Button Variety. The dinner bucket carried by many American working men became an important Republican campaign symbol. McKinley had succeeded the recession-wracked administration of Grover Cleveland in 1897. Whether by Republican engineering or historical inevitability, prosperity had returned to the country, and a variety of 1900 campaign items reminded voters of this with the image of a full dinner pail, or bucket. With its subtle sepia tones and unusual diagonal portraits, this rare version is one of the nicest. The present example is in superb near mint condition. For accuracy we note a manufacturing irregularity: a half moon shaped portion of the button paper is missing, as made. While the celluloid folds perfectly around to the collet, this leaves a portion of that collet exposed under the clear celluloid from 5:30 to 6:30. This imperfection is barely visible from the front, and detracts minimally. Diameter 1ΒΌ".
