    Description

Industrial Workers of the World [I.W.W.]: Pair of Ultra Rare 1916 Protest Pins. Pair of buttons related to the 1916 Mesaba Iron Range Strike in which IWW organizers Joe Schmidt, Carlo Tresca and Sam Scarlett were arrested for criminal libel and inciting murder. The more "commonly seen" button is 1 1/2" and pictures the trio with some mining implements, inscribed "Their Only Crime, Loyalty to Labor. Tresca Scarlett Schmidt". Excellent condition. The other button is 1 1/4" and features cartoon sketches of the trio behind bars while the hand of "Labor" extends the key to their cell and freedom. It reads "Don't Let the Steel Trust Incarcerate These Men For Life". Some edge stains. Western Badge & Novelty of St. Paul backpaper on both.
From the collection of Ed Sullivan.
